Sam Cane is a towering figure in New Zealand rugby — not just for his on-field skills, but for his integrity, resilience, and leadership. After captaining the All Blacks from 2020 through the 2023 World Cup cycle and securing over 100 caps, Sam transitioned to a new chapter in his career.
At the end of 2023, Sam announced he'd step away from All Blacks duty and head to Japan, taking on a three-year contract with Tokyo Sungoliath in the Japan Rugby League One competition. He is now fully focused on his club career in Japan and no longer plays for the All Blacks after 2024.
2024–25 Season Highlights
Sam has been a key player for Tokyo Sungoliath, making a strong impact in the 2024–25 season. In April 2025, he scored two tries in a crucial win over Toyota Verblitz, helping Sungoliath secure a playoff spot and underlining his value as both a leader and a player.
