Sir John Key – Former Prime Minister of New Zealand and Accomplished Business Leader
Sir John Phillip Key GNZM AC, born on 9 August 1961 in Auckland, New Zealand, is a distinguished politician and business executive. Following his father's death when he was eight, Key was raised by his single mother in a state house in the Christchurch suburb of Bryndwr. He attended the University of Canterbury and graduated in 1981 with a Bachelor of Commerce.
Political Career:
In 2002, Sir John entered New Zealand's Parliament as the Member of Parliament for Helensville. He swiftly rose through the ranks, becoming the leader of the New Zealand National Party in 2006. As the 38th Prime Minister from 2008 to 2016, he led the country through significant events, including the aftermath of the global financial crisis and the Christchurch earthquakes. Under his leadership, New Zealand experienced notable economic growth and stability.
Business Leadership:
Before his political career, Sir John had a successful tenure in international finance, notably as a currency trader. After retiring from politics in 2016, he transitioned back into the business sector. In January 2018, he was appointed Chair of ANZ New Zealand and joined the board of its parent company, ANZ Group, in Australia. He retired from these roles in March 2024, expressing pride in contributing to the company's growth and success.
